If I Stay by Gayle Forman

From Amazon: 'Just listen,' Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel. I open my eyes wide now. I sit up as much as I can. And I listen. 'Stay,' he says. Everybody has to make choices. Some might break you. For seventeen-year-old Mia, surrounded by a wonderful family, friends and a gorgeous boyfriend decisions might seem tough, but they're all about a future full of music and love, a future that's brimming with hope. But life can change in an instant. A cold February morning ...a snowy road ...and suddenly all of Mia's choices are gone. Except one. As alone as she'll ever be, Mia must make the most difficult choice of all. Gripping, heartrending and ultimately life-affirming, "If I Stay" will make you appreciate all that you have, all that you've lost - and all that might be.

Sometimes a book comes along that is more than just the sum of its parts. It’s hard to describe why it’s so good but it is. I read this in one go and just couldn't stop thinking about it. It was cleverly put together, giving us flashes of life before the accident so we get to know the characters both through what happens in the present and through the past. All the characters were so well created you felt the loss as much as Mia and were right there with her through the whole thing.

Just amazing – I can’t wait to see what Gayle Forman does next.

I love this book, it's definitely one of my favourites of 2009. The writing, story, characters - it's all amazing!
