I want to read that....

Undead by Kirsty McKay

From Goodreads: Bobby thinks she might well be on the School Trip from Hell. Too bad she's a noob, too bad her classmates don't rate her weirdo accent and too bad that Scotland is having the worst blizzard since the Ice Age. Looks like she's going to be on this school bus for a quite a while; could things get much worse?

Yep. They could.

Inexplicably, her classmates start dying...and then they come back to life again...and what's more, they're very, very hungry.

With nowhere to run and no contact with the outside world, Bobby is thrown together with a raggle-taggle group of survivors at a roadside café. There's indie kid drop-out Smitty, the class beauty queen Alice, dweeby Pete and two near useless adults: a half-conscious bus driver and a volatile petrol station attendant.

The frenemies struggle to stay alive - through explosions, deadly battles and a breakneck chase through the snowbound wilderness. Somehow they have to make it to safety - and get some answers - no matter what the cost.

Can they survive the Undead? And each other?

Sounds great, doesn't it? I can't wait! It's published by Chicken House in September 2011.

You can check out an extract on the Chicken House website here. And I'll leave you with the trailer ... it's nice and creeptastic!

Cover to Covet (15)

I LOVE book covers. Love, love love them. So I decided to make it a regular post - each post featuring a cover I love.

HOW MUCH DO I LOVE THIS COVER! I SEEM TO HAVE TO USE CAPITALS TO EXPRESS MY EXCITEMENT...

Okay so on top of being SUPER EXCITED to read this one (because Entangled was MAJOR awesome!) I just love it! It fits in really well with Entangled -even if it didn't have Cat Clarke on it, it would still remind me of Entangled - so I really like that! And I love the model - her hair, the way she's not quite looking at you.  It makes me wonder what's she's thinking...

Torn by Cat Clarke
From Goodreads: Four girls. One dead body. A whole lot of guilt.

Alice King isn’t expecting the holiday of a lifetime when she sets off with her classmates on a trip to the Scottish wilderness, but she’s not exactly prepared for an experience beyond her darkest nightmares…

Alice and her best friend Cass are stuck in a cabin with Polly, the social outcast, and Rae, the moody emo-girl. Then there’s Tara – queen of mean. Powerful, beautiful and cruel, she likes nothing better than putting people down.

Cass decides it’s time to teach Tara a lesson she’ll never forget. And so begins a series of events that will change the lives of these girls forever...

A compelling story of guilty secrets, troubled friendship and burgeoning love.

It's published January 2012 by Quercus.

Forgive My Fins Blog Tour: Review & Guest Post

For Review: Templar
Published: 1 July 2011

From Goodreads: Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

This is really great fun to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It's such a cute and feel-good read that I couldn't help but smile as I read.

I Loved Lily!  She is absolutely adorable and I definitely loved her interactions with Quince (I will come back to him later!)  I like how she's clumsy and has unruly hair - she's someone that we can all relate to.  I could also relate to her crush on Brody.  But honestly, with that 'blowfish' next door I think I would have found it rather hard to keep focusing my attention on Brody!  Quince is in one word gorgeous!  I loved him and wanted to shake some sense into Lily on many an occasion!  He is just so sweet to her!   I really did love their interactions and banter and they are definitely the highlight of the book for me.

I also liked the mythology  - the whole thing is really fun and I especially loved the whole bonding scenario.  My only complaint  is how easily some of the characters accepted certain information  - I think seeing would be necessary in order for their reaction to be believable but with the story as fun as it is I found it easy to overlook this.

I'm so pleased this is going to be a series and am really looking forward to the next one.  I can't wait to get back to Lily and Quince and find out what is in store for them next!  In the meantime I need to track down some more of Tera Lynn Child's books!

I'm delighted to present a guest post by Tera Lynn Childs, as part of her UK Blog Tour ...
---

Readers often ask me which of my characters I’m most like, or whether I’m a lot like Lily in Forgive My Fins. The simple answer is that there is a lot of me in all of my characters ... especially the girls. I was a high school athlete and wore mostly jeans and tees like Phoebe in Oh. My. Gods. and I suffered from a lack of confidence like Grace in Sweet Venom. Lily is probably the character I am least like.

Lily is clumsy and awkward, she doesn’t know how to fit in, and she struggles a lot with her academics. As a teen I was very athletic and coordinated. I got along with a lot of different people. And I was an honors student in every subject. Lily is skinny, pale, and has frizzy blonde hair. I’m not skinny, have skin that tans easily, and my hair is blah brown and stick straight. The one place where Lily and I are very similar, though, is when it comes to boys.

I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that Lily is single-mindedly obsessed with Brody, the swim star at her school. She has spent most of her time in high school, on land, crushing on him and wishing she could tell him how she feels. Wishing he would feel the same way too. I can’t tell you how many times I crushed like that in high school (and elementary school and junior high and, yes, even college).

Even when I knew that I didn’t really know the boy, that I was “in love” with a fantasized image of him, I couldn’t seem to stop my feelings. Lily suffers from the same problem. Some readers get frustrated with her for this, they think she should wake up to see the reality about Brody and Quince, her next door neighbor who keeps getting in the way of catching her crush.

We all know that sometimes what we should do and what we want to do are two very different things. Just like me in high school, Lily is stuck on the fantasy, the illusion, the ideal dream of what the boy might be, which is often very different than what he really is. That’s really the only way in which Lily and I are alike, besides occasionally similar tastes in clothes.

Cover Reveal: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

I am sooooo excited for this book! I can't wait to get my hands on it! And look at the pretty cover for the UK edition *sighs*

From Goodreads: BLOOD DOESN'T LIE. Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the last place anyone would think to look for vampire royalty - a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning...

It's published 23 August 2011. Squeeeeeeeee!

I LOVE book covers. Love, love love them. So I decided to make it a regular post - each post featuring a cover I love.

There is something really eye catching about this cover. I loved Wake by Lisa McMann so maybe that helps but there is just something about it.  It's as if I'm waiting for him to open his eyes...

Dead To You by Lisa McMann

From Goodreads: Ethan was abducted from his front yard when he was just seven years old. Now, at sixteen, he has returned to his family. It's a miracle... at first. Then the tensions start to build. His reintroduction to his old life isn't going smoothly, and his family is tearing apart all over again. If only Ethan could remember something, anything, about his life before, he'd be able to put the pieces back together. But there's something that's keeping his memory blocked. Something unspeakable...

I want to read that...

Ditched: A Love Story by Robin Mellom

From Goodreads: High school senior Justina Griffith was never the girl who dreamed of going to prom. Designer dresses and strappy heels? Not her thing. So she never expected her best friend, Ian Clark, to ask her.

Ian, who always passed her the baseball bat handle first.
Ian, who knew exactly when she needed red licorice.
Ian, who promised her the most amazing night at prom.
And then ditched her.

Now, as the sun rises over her small town, and with only the help of some opinionated ladies at the 7-Eleven, Justina must piece together – stain by stain on her thrift-store dress – exactly how she ended up dateless. A three-legged Chihuahua was involved. Along with a demolition derby-ready Cadillac. And there was that incident at the tattoo parlor. Plus the flying leap from Brian Sontag’s moving car…

But to get the whole story, Justina will have to face the boy who ditched her. And discover if losing out at prom can ultimately lead to true love.

How much do I love the sound of this one?  There is something very John Hughes about it! And I am a major John Hughes fan - you don't want to know how many times I've watched The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful.  Oh and Ferris Bueller's Day Off!  I think Pretty in Pink is my favourite though - because of Duckie.  Blane was gorgeous but Duckie won my heart:)

However, I digress.  Ditched published January 10th 2012 by Disney-Hyperion.  So excited!

Girl 16: Five Star Fiasco by Sue Limb

For Review: Bloomsbury
Published: June 2010

From Goodreads: The teenage world of Jess Jordon is looking characteristically chaotic: Mum has joined an online dating programme and has recruited Jess as advisor, while Jess' best friend Flora has a rich new boyfriend who Jess can't possibly keep up with. Then Jess' own boyfriend, Fred, does something unbelievably treacherous and spineless.

Although this is the fifth book in the series I had no trouble with it being the first book I read. It definitely works as a standalone but I was I enjoyed this one so much I wish I had started from the beginning.

The story follow Jess. She is trying to organise a charity event with her boyfriend Fred but is not really getting anywhere fast, her mother has decided to try online dating and needs Jess to 'help', and her dad decides he needs her help in writing a book - all of which proves a little too much for Jess...

I really loved the characters - especially Jess. They are all really quirky and great fun to spend time with. I laughed out loud so many times! I also really loved Jess and Fred's relationship - and this is where I wish I had read all the books - to see how this progressed and evolved. I'm very intrigued to see what happens with them - where they go from here.

loved the story Jess and her dad were writing - it really stood out and I looked forward to more installments of it. I can understand why they stopped with it but I do hope it is revisited in future books.

Genuinely laugh out loud funny. And utterly charming - I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It's one of those books I picked up knowing I'd probably like but ended up loving. I'm looking forward to tracking down the rest of the series and starting from the beginning. Lighthearted, funny and thoroughly enjoyable!

I want to read that...

Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday

From Goodreads: Hartley Grace Featherstone is having a very bad day. First she finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her with the president of the Herbert Hoover High School Chastity Club. Then he's pegged as the #1 suspect in a murder. And if that weren't enough, now he's depending on Hartley to clear his name. Seriously? Not cool. But as much as Hartley wouldn't mind seeing him squirm, she knows he's innocent, and she's the only one who can help him. Along with her best friend, Sam, and the school's resident Bad Boy, Chase, Hartley starts investigating on her own. But as the dead bodies begin to pile up, the mystery deepens, the suspects multiply, and Hartley begins to fear that she may be the killer's next victim.

I'm really liking the sound of this one - kind of Veronica Mars ish! And I love the cover - the way they do the title with the earphones!

It's published October 2011 by Harper Teen.

Forgotten by Cat Patrick

From Goodreads: With the intrigue of "Memento" and the romance of "The Time-Traveller's Wife", "Forgotten" is the perfect YA novel.

Each night when 16 year-old London Lane goes to sleep, her whole world disappears. In the morning, all that's left is a note telling her about a day she can't remember. The whole scenario doesn't exactly make high school or dating that hot guy whose name she can't seem to recall any easier. But when London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can't make sense of, she realizes it's time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

Part psychological drama, part romance, and part mystery, this thought-provoking novel will inspire readers to consider the what-if's in their own lives and recognize the power they have to control their destinies.

I loved the concept of this book and I believe the author did a fantastic job of bringing all the elements together.  It really is part psychological drama, part romance and part mystery.

The story follows London - who remembers her future but not her past. Each day her memory resets itself and she has to leave herself notes in order to know what happened the previous day. But when she meets a boy she doesn't remember from her future and starts having visions she doesn't understand,  she realises she needs to find out the truth about her past...

As I said I loved the concept behind this one - how London is able to remember her future but not her past - but like the Terminator and Back To The Future movies it makes my brain hurt if I think about it too much. It one of those things I could drive myself crazy with - and go in circles trying to figure out - when it's just easier to accept that it happens. The author does a great job at making that really easy to do - I loved her writing style and her characters were spot on. I found myself lost in that world and believed in it wholeheartedly.

Both London and Luke are instantly likeable. In fact I think I developed a bit of a crush on Luke - he was incredibly sweet towards London and, well, that letter? *sighs*. I also really liked London's friend Jamie and could see where she was coming from in regard to her and London's disagreement.

The novel shifts gears slightly toward the end - and it felt unexpected but not necessarily a bad thing. I really like how the book ended - some things are left - not exactly unresolved - but kind of with a hint of unfinished business. It feels as if there could be a sequel but at the same time it would be okay if there wasn't. I guess, and at the risk of sounding slightly lame, it ends with hope. And I liked that.

Forgotten Blog Tour: Top Ten Book Male Crushes (Guest Post)

I'm delighted to be part of Cat Patrick's blog tour.  She is here today to talk about her top 10 book crushes...
----

Top Ten Book Male Crushes

Ah…that guy. The one who makes your toes curl while you’re reading; who makes you flip the pages faster to find out what he’ll do next. Following is my Top Ten List of Book Crushes.

The emotional sort: Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Cabel from Lisa McMann’s Fade series are two crush-worthy fellows with a sensitive streak. From different time periods—and drastically different families—they’re both haunted by memories and out to protect (or avenge) the ones they love.

Manly men…with a few flaws: Gale from The Hunger Games, Tyler Durden from Fight Club and Harry Bosch from Michael Connelly’s many crime novels are all ready to fight for what’s right, and they’ve all got something about their personality that makes me look at them sideways (in a good way).

The adventurous ones: I was giddy reading about Tristan Thorn in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust as he set out to find a star for his girlfriend, only to fall in love with that star. Quentin Coldwater of Lev Grossman’s The Magicians is perhaps less gung-ho about his adventures in magic school but is always cool nonetheless, like someone you’d see in your favorite alterna-band. Kote from The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is a swoon-worthy barkeep with fire red hair who tells of his adventures as a younger man. How could anyone not love a sexy bartender with a past?

And of course, the strong, silent type. Mr. Darcy. Edward Cullen. Will Grayson from Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan (could I type “Will Grayson” more?). Ky from Ally Condie’s Matched. Each is wonderful for what he doesn’t say, leaving the reader’s interest piqued and maybe even making their breath catch a little, too.

(My apologies for listing more than 10, but in the vast sea of books, there are a lot of colorful fish.)

----

Thanks Cat!  I have to strongly agree with Cabel!

Cover Wars: Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan

UK /  US

I love the UK one! It reminds me a lot of Across The Universe by Beth Revis but it's just so eye catching! And I love the way they have done the title.  I do really like the US one too but I think I would prefer it without the girl - just the black and the title. I do like the glow around the letter O though and the way they have the title vertical rather than horizontal.

Which do you prefer?

Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton

For Review: Simon & Schuster
Published: 9 June 2011

From Goodreads: Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.

Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.

She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.

Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

There is something about this one that really appealed to me.  I loved the mixture of paranormal, romance, mystery and a pinch of horror.

The story follows Ari.  With her teal eyes and silver hair, Ari had spent her life unable to blend into the background.  Having spent many years going from one foster home to another she has finally found a 'home' with her current foster parents.  But she still feels the need to find out about her past - who she is and where she came from - and this leads her to a place called New 2, the rebuilt city of New Orleans.  But will Ari find the answers she seeks?  And if she does -  will she be able to face the truth?

I loved Ari - she's really strong and sassy - I really enjoyed her narrative.  She could also completely hold her own and wasn't looking for anyone to save her.  She wanted to save herself and I really liked that about her.

I also loved Sebastian straight away, and Violet too.  There is something really intriguing about her character.  I liked the way the characters interacted.  Ari and Violet have a lovely bond - it seems to happen almost as soon as they laid eyes on each other but I really liked that.  Things also happen very quickly between Ari and Sebastian - since I really liked Sebastian from the start I can completely understand his appeal - but it still felt a bit too fast, especially since the book only seemed to span a few days in total.  On the other hand,  I find this tends to happen quite often in paranormal romance books and I think the intense situations the characters find themselves in kind of justifies it to a certain degree.

I thought the mythology behind the series was brilliant - something fresh and different  - I really liked the fact it's not just paranormal but a bit of horror mixed in too.  I found myself really creeped out in places so that was ace!  I also loved all the twist and turns - many of which I didn't see coming.   I can't wait to find out what Kelly Keaton has planned for us in the next installment.

I want to read that...

Ashes by Ilsa Bick

From Goodreads:  Alex has run away and is hiking through the wilderness with her dead parents' ashes, about to say goodbye to the life she no longer wants to live. But then the world suddenly changes. An electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky zapping every electronic device and killing the vast majority of adults. For those spared, it's a question of who can be trusted and who has changed... Everyone still alive has turned - some for the better (those who acquired a superhuman sense) while others for the worse (those who acquired a taste for human flesh). Desperate to find out what happened and to avoid the zombies that are on the hunt, Alex meets up with Tom - an Army veteran who escaped one war only to find something worse at home - and Ellie, a young girl whose grandfather was killed by the electromagnetic pulse. This improvised family will have to use every ounce of courage they have just to find food, shelter, while fighting off the 'Changed' and those desperate to stay alive. A tense and involving adventure with shocks and sudden plot twists that will keep teen and adult readers gripped.

I love the sound of this and can't wait to see if it lives up to my expectations!  It's published September 2011 by Quercus (UK) and Egmont (US)

Shift by Jeri Smith-Ready

For Review: Simon & Schuster

From Goodreads   Aura's life is anything but easy. Her boyfriend, Logan, died, and his slides between ghost and shade have left her reeling. Aura knows he needs her now more than ever. She loves Logan, but she can't deny her connection with the totally supportive, totally gorgeous Zachary. And she's not sure that she wants to.

Logan and Zachary will fight to be the one by her side, but Aura needs them both to uncover the mystery of her past—the mystery of the Shift.

As Aura's search uncovers new truths, she must decide whom to trust with her secrets…and her heart.

I officially love this series! It's fun, addictive and something a bit different in the paranormal romance genre.

Shift continues straight on from the end of Shade - where Logan and Aura get a little more than they bargained for! Not sure what it all means and how it fits in with the mystery surrounding the Shift, Aura continues her quest to find answers. But with Logan and Zachery competing for her affections,  Aura has to decide where her heart truly lies...

I still really liked Aura - even though some of her actions were a bit questionable - you can understand how complicated her life must be. I like how determined she is to find out about the Shift and how she is connected to it. Logan has grown in this one and I liked him much more - there is something about him that makes him likeable even when he does the wrong thing! I adore Zachery though - and yes I think the accent helps! He does a few questionable things in this one as well but his life has gotten seriously complicated too so I had to give him some leeway for that.  And the chemistry between him and Aura is seriously good!

The mystery surrounding the Shift continues to intrigue. I must admit I had worked out a few things, including one of the revelations concerning Aura's parentage, but there were many surprises that had me on the edge of my seat.  I love Jeri Smith-Ready's writing - and I can't wait for the third installment in this series. I am really looking forward to getting answers and finding out what happens to these characters.
