For Review: Random House. Published 20 January 2011.
From Goodreads: Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. Donna's own nearly fatal injuries from the assault were fixed by magic—the iron tattoos branding her hands and arms. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma.
When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.
I have really been looking forward to this one and I loved every minute of it!
Donna has had to keep her world of magic and alchemy a secret all her life. A brutal fey attack on her family when she was seven left her father dead, her mother insane and Donna with 'fixed' arms - they are magically branded with iron tattoos. When her best friend, Nav, stumbles upon her secret he puts himself in danger. Desperate to save him, Donna enlists the help of Xan, a boy with secrets of his own...
If there's a team I'm definitely Team Xan! Or I'm a Xan Fan - that has a nice ring to it! I loved every scene he was in (especially the shirtless one!). Don't get me wrong I adored Nav too. And Donna. In fact I loved all the characters! Donna is a great main character - she has the right balance of strength and vulnerability to make her likeable. Navin is fun as her best friend. The two obviously have a strong friendship and I'm interested to see how this will develop now he knows the truth about Donna's world. And Xan (gorgeous Xan!) is the mysterious, sexy. and (kind of) bad boy that Donna is instantly attracted to (and who could blame her?). I really liked the pace of their relationship. Although they are obviously drawn to each other they take their time in developing their friendship and I really enjoyed that.
I also loved Karen Mahoney's writing. And the world she created is just brilliant. It's all very exciting and moves along swiftly, making this a rather quick but addictive read! I can't wait to get my hands on The Wood Queen! I need more Xan!
